Want to boost chickpea yield by 40% / to increase legume productivity and don’t know what to do?

Improving yield is often/always hampered by unequalled performance of genetic material across testing locations or within same locations. These are known as “genotype-by-environment interactions (G×E), and this implies that interactions also occur with the agronomic management (G×E×M). It is virtually impossible to overcome these interactions solely by experimental means. Crop simulation-modeling offers a tool to explore these interactions, to better target what is really worth testing experimentally among thousands of possible combinations. Over the last 5 years, we have used Simple Simulation Model (SSM) to predict yield of a range of grain legume species in different environments and guide potentially promising breeding or agronomic management targets. For instance, a minor irrigation (40 mm) at the beginning of chickpea seed growth is expected to boost chickpea yield by about 40% in India. Food for thought!
